13. Harvest money at your annual reviews - This is a great idea to both strengthen your relationship with your clients AND bring in money whenever you need it.

We need to meet with our clients regularly. However, these need not be merely a report card on their investments. You can turn your annual meetings into wonderful opportunities. Here are some of the things I shoot for at my annual meetings:

  1. Make sure that the client understands that I care about them and their family as much as their money.
  2. Find other new money that they are ready to move to me. According to many studies, the more assets a household have…the more likely they are to have multiple advisors.
  3. Give them a reason to give me a referral.
  4. Review a new or cool technique.
  5. Ask them if they know anyone who is _______(fill in blank with appropriate type of person. If I show them a 401(k) withdrawal technique, then I would fill in the blank with…who is retiring or has changed jobs recently?)
  6. Ensure that they are comfortable with their overall financial situation to head off any problems or concerns before they get out of hand.

14. 3-minute magic script - Have you ever supervised a birthday party for a bunch of 8 year olds? If you lose control in the first three minutes…when will you get control back? Those that have experienced it will tell you never.

It is much the same with prospects. If you allow the prospect to take control of the meeting, it becomes a wrestling match to get it back.

I developed this script to accomplish four things in the first 3 minutes of every initial meeting:

  1. Demonstrate courteousness and concern for the client and their time and…Require the client to demonstrate courteousness and concern for ME and MY time.

    The trick is having the client tell you (If you tell the client these things, they will not believe you and will actually “turn you off” and not listen):

  2. Why they are in my office.
  3. That I am an expert on the very reason they are in my office.
  4. And that everybody in the community concerned with this issue all work with me.

Think about this…If your prospect in the first 3 minutes tells you why they are there…great - but virtually all financial planners gather this information…but…

What if you get them to tell you that you are an expert on that topic? What would that get you? They have just handed over control of the meeting to you.

Virtually ALL advisors TELL this to the prospect. If you tell them it is worthless. The prospect must tell you! If they say it, it is the truth. If you say it, you are full of yourself and it is not true.

Now, what if you can get them to say not only that you are an expert but that everyone that is worried about the same thing that they are worried about, works with you? Now they have handed over complete control of the meeting to you.

Again, you cannot tell them this or you will NOT be believed. You must have them say it…and when they do - control is yours and all of this and future meetings will be much more effective for both you and your prospects.
